Día 1: jueves 18 de abril de 2024
On Dutch soil! Yesterday we arrived in Zeist after a long journey from Tenerife. Today, the students had their first day together at school where they enjoyed an African drama workshop and an interesting history lesson. During the drama workshop they acted out some small scenes from their invented stories and they were all very creative! For the history workshop, we learned about the connection that The Netherlands and Spain have had these past centuries.
After a lunch break in the school, we went on to learn about common cultural stereotypes.The students created a poster whereby they listed, with interesting images, about the positive and negative stereotypes we all hear about on the Dutch and the Spaniards.
We ended the day with the students leaving to their respective homes the Dutch way, on their bikes!
Tomorrow we are heading out to Amsterdam, which we are sure is going to be a unique and enriching experience!
Ya en tierras neerlandesas! Ayer, tras un largo viaje desde Tenerife, llegamos a Zeist. Hoy, nuestros estudiantes han pasado su primer día juntos en el colegio, donde han disfrutado de un taller de teatro africano y una interesante lección de Historia. Durante el taller de Drama han ideado algunas historias que han escenificado a continuación, ¡y han sido muy creativos! Ya en el taller de Historia, hemos aprendido sobre la historia en común de ambos países en los últimos siglos.
Después de almorzar en el colegio, tuvimos una actividad sobre estereotipos de ambas culturas. El alumnado, en grupos, ha creado carteles donde han enumerado, con interesantes imágenes, los estereotipos que solemos escuchar sobre los neerlandeses y los españoles.
Hemos acabado el día como hacen sus compañeros neerlandeses a diario, ¡yendo en bici a casa!
Y mañana… ¡Ámsterdam, donde seguro que disfrutaremos de una experiencia única y enriquecedora!
Day 2, April 19th
Today it was time to visit the capital of The Netherlands, Amsterdam!
Our first stop was The Rijksmuseum. It hosts the marvellous works of art from painters like Rembrandt, van Gogh and Vermeer. This last one is famous for painting, amongst other works of art,‘The girl with the pearl earring’ . We were divided in small groups and headed out to discover the hidden mysteries of Dutch art by solving some riddles.
After having a bit of free time to enjoy lunch and some Dutch souvenir shopping, we headed out to the famous canals for a paddle boat adventure. The canals and their boat traffic were no match for our expert students, who managed to ‘conquer’ the canals with their brilliant pedalling together with their Dutch matches 😁

Hoy hemos visitado la capital del Reino de los Países Bajos… ¡Ámsterdam!
Nuestra primera parada ha sido el Rijksmuseum, donde hemos podido disfrutar de las excepcionales obras de arte de pintores como Rembrandt, van Gogh y Vermeer. Este último es conocido por, entre otras, su obra “La joven de la perla”. En el museo nos hemos dividido en pequeños grupos y hemos realizado una actividad en la que, mediante algunas pistas, descubrimos los misterios ocultos del arte neerlandés.
Por último, y después de disfrutar de tiempo libre para comer y comprar souvenirs de la ciudad, hemos ido a los famosos canales para disfrutar de una aventura en las típicas barcas de pedales. En ellos, los canales han sido conquistados por nuestro “experimentado” alumnado, que ha pedaleado brillantemente junto a sus colegas neerlandeses 😁

Day 3, April 20rd
The city of Utrecht was our destination today.
We gathered at 09:30 at Dom square to climb the 465 steps of the Dom tower. The tower, finished in the year 1382, provided us with beautiful views of the Dutch land, being able to see even parts of Amsterdam and Rotterdam from that height. Inside the tower, the students rang the century old bells the tower has, the traditional way, with a hammer.
After the tour of the tower, the students headed out for a discovery tour of the city of Utrecht. During this tour the students learned about the different buildings, statues and houses of the city, where the Peace treaty was signed in 1713, which ended the War of the Spanish succession.
To finish the day, the students enjoyed some free time to be able to do some shopping and taste the typical Dutch foods on offer like the famous, ‘patatje oorlog’.
Tomorrow they will enjoy Dutch family life and we are certain they will have a wonderful time together.
La ciudad de Utrecht fue nuestro destino hoy.
Quedamos a las 09:30 en la Plaza del Dom para subir los 465 escalones de la Torre de Dom. Construida en el año 1382, la torre tiene una altura de 112 metros, y desde su cúspide pudimos disfrutar de unas maravillosas vistas de las tierras neerlandesas, pudiendo ver desde allí las ciudades de Ámsterdam y Rotterdam. Además, dentro de la torre, el alumnado pudo tocar las campanas, varias de ellas con una antigüedad de más de 500 años, al estilo tradicional, con un martillo.
Tras la visita a la torre, realizamos un tour para descubrir la ciudad de Utrecht, en el que aprendieron curiosidades sobre los diferentes edificios, estatuas y casas de la ciudad en la que se firmó el tratado de paz con España tras la Guerra de los 80 años .
Por último, para terminar el día, los estudiantes disfrutaron de tiempo libre para hacer algunas compras y probar la típica comida neerlandesa, como las famosas ‘patatje oorlog’.
Mañana es día de realizar actividades con las familias de acogida, ¡seguro de disfrutan todos juntos!
Day 5 and 6, April 22nd and 23rd
On our last day in The Netherlands it was time to get a bit more sporty and learn about the Dutch countryside. That is why, early in the morning, we travelled to Kamerink for a day of fun and games. The students were divided in two groups and while some discovered a Dutch farm on a canoe, the others enjoyed teamwork activities that required some creativity and getting wet! The students learned how to work in a team and complete challenges giving it their all.
In the afternoon we enjoyed our last evening together at the school disco party organised by Christelijk Lyceum Zeist. Together with our matches, another Spanish school and a school from Finland we danced the night away on the Macarena and other famous tunes. The school provided not only the music and the party mood, but also some fizzy drinks and Dutch treats for the students to enjoy.
We are sad to leave, but we do so with gratitude towards the students, their families and teachers from Christelijk Lyceum Zeist, knowing that this has been a lasting positive experience in our students ‘as well as our own lives.
En nuestro último día en Los Países Bajos tuvimos la oportunidad de hacer una actividad más deportiva y aprender algo más sobre el entorno rural neerlandés. Así, por la mañana temprano, viajamos hacia Kamerink para disfrutar de un día de juegos y diversión. El alumnado fue dividido en dos grupos y, mientras que uno descubría los alrededores de una granja neerlandesa a través de los canales en una canoa, el resto disfrutaba de actividades deportivas, que requerían de creatividad ¡y de un chapuzón!, además de aprender con ellas a trabajar en equipo y completar los retos dándolo todo.
Por la tarde, disfrutamos de nuestras últimas horas juntos en la fiesta organizada por el Christelijk Lyceum Zeist. Conjuntamente con nuestras parejas de intercambio, y con la presencia de estudiantes de otro colegio de España y uno de Finlandia, bailamos hasta tarde la Macarena y demás música popular de todos estos países. El colegio no solo proporcionó la música, sino que también ofreció refrescos y algo de picar típico neerlandés.
Todas las despedidas son tristes, pero estamos muy agradecidos con el alumnado, familias y profesorado del Christelijk Lyceum Zeist, sabiendo que este intercambio ha ofrecido una experiencia inolvidable a nuestro alumnado y a nosotros.
